July 2012 | Literacy | Eduardo Arenas & Lorena Endara

There is a great need to promote literacy in Coco Solo. A lot of the youth does not go to school on a regular basis, and once they miss a subject, they move forward without looking back. This is the only explanation for why students in the fifth grade do not know how to read or write. For this reason, we led a workshop to promote literacy in a more engaging and creative way. The youth took photographs to represent a word that started with each letter of the alphabet. They also made a song with these words that focuses on how each letter sounds. At the end, we were all very proud of the results — especially the youth who realized they can create educational tools to help their siblings, cousins, or other kids throughout the country.
