This workshop was inspired by an invitation for Cambio Creativo youth participants to exhibit a video piece at The Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts in Toronto. This event was part of Scotiabank’s Nuit Blanche Arts Festival on October 5, 2013. The theme of the exhibition was the number 13.
In the workshop, the youth learned basic video camera operation and practiced conducting interviews. They asked Coco Solo residents what they remember about being 13, or how they imagined their life would be at age 13. The youth worked in production groups of 3-4 and each team member had a specific production role: videographer, director, or interviewer. The youth also recorded a lot of b-roll where they are preforming for the camera. In the final video piece, we are presented with the contradictions of youth and adulthood, positivity and negativity, aggression and sensitivity, that these youth are navigating on a daily basis.
